Not Quite Two

If I tell you that Daddy
Has a special friend
Who's someone else's Mummy
Could you please pretend
That you're a little older
Than you really are
And tell me what I should do next
Before we go too far?
Daddy, I think it better
If this is what you do -
Pretend that you and she are just
Like me, not quite two.
Then you'll see more clearly
Without the mists of time
That she is like a clear blue sky
That needs your sun to shine
And see that like a little tree
You need her rain to grow
What's right or wrong you've not been told -
You're much too young to know
But remember that when nighttime comes
She like you must rest
So that when tomorrow dawns
You'll both be at your best
For all the children in this world
Beneath the stars above
The book of life has just one page
It starts and ends with love.
